What’s the latest in furniture design and gadgets?
What defines the domestic market after stores finally open all of their terrestrial retail presence? Let’s take a look.
Lost Weekend is a staple for any design-loving Dublin weekender, and even with the challenges of 2021, the team is pushing their admirable style forward.
It was recently announced that “it was thrilled to introduce you to our newest brand, Mobel Copenhagen! Mobel Copenhagen approaches furniture design in a vibrant, fresh and fun way, while maintaining what Danes normally know for quality, functionality and innovation are”.
Fascinated? Well the first thing to do is download the latest catalog on mobel-copenhagen.com and the second thing to do is hide your credit card to slow down.
Among the pieces to consider is the three-part Pair Side Table group by David Thurlstrup, one of their anchor-collaborating designers. Intended for “modern simplicity”, it includes a choice of table sizes and an Ottoman ceramic style seat or three-legged steel perch – all in one purchase in a variety of chic compositions that can fit into each other and slide out of the way if necessary. What a stunning little apartment to buy.
A good entry point is the blessed little angled stool made of steel rods – perfect for outdoors or indoors, € 338. Otherwise, you can start in the high hundreds with this award-winning brand, lostweekend.ie (follow their luscious pics on Instagram and Facebook).
With the coming summer, the quality of our drinking water requires a glass of self-determination. Just what is in this well or even in this mains supply? I had no idea, but testing well water, for example, according to many specialists, should be done about every 12 months.
Microbiological tests are widely used and check whether there are safe values for supply and dangerous values for things not contained, sediment, odor, pH value, alkalinity, dissolved solids, nitrates, iron, manganese, hardness and clear penetration of bacteria.
Before you just paddle out and buy a water filtration system that you may or may not need, get your water tested, especially if you have a new or decade-old borehole of your own.
Three-stage filtration Swisspro Core from 490 €. swisspure.ie (Woodstown, Co Waterford)
There are different test levels to check the safety of the water. However, a standard test would be done in the range of € 86.50 by a well known specialist like Acorn Water in Bandon.
Various test parameters are offered so you can contact your company to find out what is best for you. All you have to do is send a 500 ml bottle of your tap water to the laboratory address (usually free of charge). You will then be informed of the results and receive a full lab report by email.
If it turns out that your water is not entirely fit for purpose or could be tasted better, you can choose between water filtration systems that can be ordered online and installed by you or your plumber, or fully installed by a supplier. A number of testing options can be found at h20labcheck.com.
An example of pricing for a respected filtration brand would be around € 490 for something like the Swisspro Core three-stage filtration, which doesn’t remove the essential minerals that give the water its subtle taste. You should of course plan a budget for a possible change to the tap, the installation and the filter price – from 80 to 130 euros for 10,000 l or an annual supply. swisspure.ie (Woodstown, Co Waterford).
Since March, the well-known AD Energy Labels have been slightly but importantly re-scaled for your most popular large household appliances.
A new scale from A to G now applies to refrigerators, dishwashers, washing machines and televisions. Other changes will be made in September including a better idea of energy efficient lightbulbs. Now there will be stock in Ireland’s showrooms with old tags or two on (give the retailer a break; deals on most units are fantastic right now and they are catching up).
The new labels are easy to identify and provide additional information. First and foremost, they carry a QR code that can be stolen with your phone or any suitable device for instant access to all kinds of information. The next class of product is the next, and this reflects the latest changes in expected performance. Therefore, an A +++ washing machine can be displayed as C.
A C does not mean that the machine is performing poorly. It’s just that the scale has changed to reflect the scorching performance of machines in the new A and B scale. Some methods of calculating the scale (number of washes, etc.) have also changed, which affects the class of your device.
The annual energy consumption is the number to watch and this is still given in kWh per year. Simply calculate your operating costs with the latest price per kW from your electricity supplier. After all, the noise, expressed in decibels (dB), has a four-class scale of AD, with D being the most curious, making it easier to judge the whisper-quiet winner at a glance.
Integrated ventilation changes the face of our kitchen. This GlassDraftAir descends seamlessly from the counter. 80cm iQ700 LD88WMM66B glassdraftAir at a price of € 2,699, new.siemens.com/ie
Bosch and Siemens are two of a growing number of range manufacturers, including ventilation as part of the top induction hob design in a through-the-counter hood system. This means that no more steam rises and your glasses or a roaring extractor steam up over you.
A discreet, quiet draft of air into the surface of your induction cooker simply drinks the steam and associated smells over and away from the pots and pans – eliminating the need for a visually dominant hood over the oven area.
The device appears as a slot in the surface connected with hidden channels and can be placed in the center or on the side of the device. Alternatively, consider a glass beauty like the GlassDraftAir that rises seamlessly from the counter. 80cm iQ700 LD88WMM66B glassdraftAir for the price of € 2,699, new.siemens.com/ie
Be warned: Enjoy the “automatic control of the hood settings for maximum extraction performance with minimum noise level” and the joy of PerfectCook with Bosch. Thanks to the intelligent Bluetooth connectivity, the cost of a hob (regardless of the oven) increases to over 3,000 euros.
Don’t be surprised or flattered if they bring you a free set of induction pans with such an offer. I would expect it! With EletriQ and Elica, look for cheap brand purchases in the range of 800 to 1,600 euros. Elica offers a nifty built-in scale for your tastier purchases along with NikolaTesla, your intuitive Libra interface. Expect your manufacturer to offer parts for your new white goods so that they can last for at least a decade. The UK has legislation in place to ensure that large equipment must be protected from short life and forced obsolescence due to breakage. Image: Bosch
The British have not only introduced new energy standards for household appliances, but are now demanding that manufacturers produce spare parts for household machines for the first time and deliver them to the general public. Extension of the service life of products and especially some devices by up to 10 years and prevention of premature obsolescence.
Lord Callanan and Hon Kwasi Kwarteng MP of the Ministry of Economy, Energy and Industrial Strategy propose in a statement that these measures “reduce carbon emissions by eight megatons in 2021 by reducing the consumption of energy products over their lifespan – the equivalent – will mean removing all emissions from Birmingham and Leeds every year. ”
