The Sims 4: A Complete Guide To Modular Furniture

The Sims 4 Dream Home Decorator Pack has finally added couches and modular shelves to the game. Two sets of matching styles and patterns are available for both new furniture types.

We take a look at the options you can find in the game and how they all fit together, as well as all the different things you can do with the new couches and storage options.

Sectional Sofa Options in Dream Home Decorator

Dream Home Decorator is available with two different sofa designs. The first is a sleek and modern style with flat pillows and sleek, rounded arms. Apart from the button on the back cushions, there are few details in this design.

The second design is more rustic with padded cushions and exposed wooden arms and backs. This makes it look more like a wooden sofa with removable cushions.

Each design consists of ten parts. They include:

  • Left arm section
  • Right-wing section
  • Armless section
  • Backless part (can be used as an ottoman)
  • Square corner profile
  • Circular corner profile
  • Outside corner part
  • Armless lounge chair section
  • Chaise longue with left arm
  • Chaise longue area with right arm

There is also a matching armchair for both versions.

Both sofa designs have 12 swatches of color and they match the two designs so any color scheme you choose will fit any design.

In addition to a choice of pastel colors, there are also black, white, gray and cream colors to keep things neutral.

As you can see from the options above, the pieces are versatile enough to create a wide range of styles and designs. Each section simply snaps together when you place them next to each other, although they also move individually.

There is an automatic option that tries to fill in the gaps, but it has varying degrees of success due to the wide variety of pieces to choose from. It only really works when you place a sofa in a corner against a wall. We found it easier to place and move parts one by one.

In addition to the sectional sofas, you can also find a wide variety of shelving options that can be used in most rooms in the home. There are floor and wall units, as well as free items like coffee tables and desks.

As with the sofas, there are two different styles. The first has rounded corners and the second has angular corners. Each style has the same basic parts and a few different extras.

Dream Home Decorator Rounded Modular Furniture

All round corner furniture options

There are a good number of pieces of furniture in this set and most of them will snap together. The following is included:

  • Floor-standing bookcase
  • Stand media unit
  • Open shelf with one drawer
  • Desk with drawers
  • Desk in the same design as the small table on the wall (not shown)
  • Small table
  • Coffee table with shelves
  • Coffee table with drawer
  • Dresser
  • Tall cabinet with doors
  • Tall cabinet with shelf
  • Open wardrobe with clothes rail
  • Wall-mounted media unit with drawers
  • Wall-mounted cabinet with two drawers
  • Wall shelf and closet
  • Open wall shelf with clothes rail
  • Wall-mounted cube unit
  • Wall shelf

There are a few other pieces of furniture that work with these as well, but they don’t snap together. The small table is included here, but due to the design of the legs, not everything clicks onto it. There’s also a desk of the same design that has the same limited snap functionality.

The angular options have slight variations in terms of the snap-on parts, including presentation units, but not a large dresser. The bench shown does not lock into place, but it goes perfectly with this design. The snap elements are:

  • Floor-standing bookcase
  • Stand media unit
  • Stand showcase
  • writing desk
  • Small side table with drawers
  • Coffee table with drawer
  • Tall cabinet with doors
  • Open wardrobe with clothes rail
  • Wall-mounted media unit with drawers
  • Wall-mounted cabinet with two drawers
  • Wall shelf with glass pane
  • Open wall shelf with clothes rail
  • Wall-mounted cube unit
  • Wall-mounted bookcase
  • Wall showcase

All of these units are linked together so you can create a number of different combinations. You can also combine the two designs if you want as the modular system is all the same, so rounded parts match square ones.

Both designs have 16 swatches and there is some overlap. However, both variants also have some unique options.

In both sets you will find black, white and several wood tone combinations that allow some mixing and matching. There are also other pastel-colored woods for the square furniture that go well with existing retro kitchen items. The rounded furniture has swatches of more vibrant colors mixed with white to match items for children’s bedrooms.

Modular furniture tips for dream home decorators

Bedroom furnishings made from modular furniture

The most common thing to think of when you think of the modular shelves is huge media centers in the lounge, but these units are much more versatile. You can create walk-in closets, dressers, and shoe storage in bedrooms, and use complementary pieces like beds, end tables, and chairs to add the finishing touches.

Outside of the bedroom, the furniture can also be used to add unique shelves in your bathroom, various wall units in a kitchen, and much more.

The items are versatile enough to fit even in small spaces, allowing you to create wardrobes, display areas, and work areas.

Each part snaps onto the one next to it when placed in an adjacent grid field. To move them all just click on the first one you placed and the whole set will move. If you click units separately, you can remove a unit from a larger unit.

Bunks with modular furniture underneath

The package also contains a large number of items that are coordinated with the modular units. Four new bunk bed designs even have variants that place the new modular elements under the beds to show how well they go together.

We recommend using the filters in build and buy mode to see how many other things you can find that go with the shelves and sofas. There are kitchens, sinks, curtains, carpets, dining tables, chairs, and more.

Bugs and problems with modular shelving

Snap errors on units

Most of the time, the modular shelf works very well. Often times, the only problems are the result of trying to snap wall pieces onto floor standing pieces. Sometimes the units intersect as seen above. This error seems to mainly affect the media device. If you replace it with the wall version, you can still put it on the floor, but it will click into place more easily.

The other common problem is that two units will snap into place on the wrong side. This is mostly just a case of fiddling. When you get something like the picture in the top right, try snapping the sections together in a different combination as it appears to be trying to bring two small groups of units together.

The final mistake you will discover is the lighting bug, which makes patches of color appear a different color. This is a long-standing problem of the game, most commonly seen with kitchen wall cabinets.

Overall, the units work well, go well together, and are incredibly versatile. Builders in particular will love this new addition to the game.
