GREENVILLE COUNTY, SC (WRDW / WAGT) – The grim search for that continues Thursday morning
Family members mourn baby Anthony and neighbors tonight.
Crews spent the day looking for the body of Baby Anthony after authorities received a tip that a woman had left a baby’s body in a dumpster at some point over the weekend.
It happened in an apartment complex on Dove Street in Johnston. A crew emptied the dumpster and took the trash to a landfill in Greenville.
The apartment complex on Dove Street has around a dozen units. Each of those neighbors, News 12, said they felt hurt too.
Neighbors gathered, cars pulled up, and the sun set on a quiet Johnston apartment complex.
“In a small community like this, everyone is close,” said Lakera Campbell.
The Dove Street complex was much quieter on Wednesday afternoon than it had been a few hours earlier when investigators searched a dumpster for evidence.
“We didn’t think nothing like this would happen in Johnston,” said Crystal Cannon.
Investigators say a young mother left her baby in a dumpster in front of the complex.
“I landed on Facebook this morning and saw something about the incident and couldn’t believe it,” Cannon said. “So I came out and saw all the police and I was like, ‘Gosh, this is really happening'”
Cannon and Campbell live just two doors down, where the family said the young mother stayed at the time.
“To think we threw trash on him just isn’t right,” said Cannon.
When Campbell walked out the door for work this morning, investigators were lining the parking lot looking for answers.
“I don’t want it to be true,” said Campbell. “It’s just sad.”
When she returned home, she learned why they were there.
“Man, my heart has dropped,” said Campbell. “My eyes were watering like now, it’s hard to believe.”
The young mothers themselves say they want to honor the life of baby Anthony.
They are currently working on planning a balloon release in honor of Baby Anthony. They say it will take place on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. at the Dove Street apartment complex.
