Resident seeks injunction against Charleroi over trash hauler | Local News

A Charleroi resident has asked a Washington County judge to intervene in his community’s garbage disposal contract award.

James Smith of McKean Avenue claims the Westmoreland Sanitary Landfill, Belle Vernon, was the worst-qualified responsible bidder for the disposal of Charleroi’s residential and non-residential waste and roll-off bins.

At a council meeting on July 8th, an order was to be awarded pending approval by the district attorney.

Smith alleges in a lawsuit in Washington County Court that a vote was held at a July 27 meeting and that the contract was awarded to Big’s Sanitation Inc., also by Belle Vernon.

The local resident claims Charleroi has not properly investigated the matter without abiding by the district code, which will result in higher taxes and sanitation payments.

Charleroi lawyer Steven Toprani could not be reached immediately for comment on Wednesday.

President Judge Katherine B. Emery has scheduled a hearing on Smith’s motion for a restraining order on September 30.
