Ouachita Christian School prepares for school year starting with removal of old carpet | KTVE

MONROE, La (KTVE / KARD) – As soon as students enter the Ouachita Christian School campus, they are immediately checked for temperature at one of four different check-in locations.

“If you’re visiting our school or delivery, you have a temperature control with a vending machine on our doorstep,” said Jayme Stokes, assistant principal at Ouachita Christian School.

Once in the classroom: “The students will have portable desk signs in grades 1 to 12. They’ll be delivered in the next day or two and the kids will fold them up and take them to the next high school grade and return them to their class teacher at the end of the day, ”Stokes said.

The younger classes have permanent desk signs. All furniture has been removed from the classrooms to allow for the social distancing of the desks. The biggest change in preparation for the school year was the removal of the 30-year-old rug from elementary school classes.

“We ripped out the whole carpet and laid vinyl plank floors everywhere. It’s easier to clean, it smells a lot fresher, ”said Stokes.

Students eat lunch outside unless it is raining, then they eat in the classroom. As new social distancing guidelines have been set, OCS is working hard to keep students and staff clean.

“We have about four different cleaning protocols. Of course, the teachers will clean their classrooms every day. We have horse troughs that we have turned into hand washing stations. Of course we have hand sanitizer available, and then we hired two extra people at night just to disinfect, ”said Stokes.

OCS is also prepared when a student tests positive for COVID-19. “” So if you are at a table in Pre-K, these are the four children you are with for nine days. So when a child tests positive, we just notify the other three people at the table. It saves us from having to send an entire classroom home to hide, ”said Stokes.

To improve cleaning and COVID-19 exposure cleaning, OCS has partnered with a local laboratory to monitor cleanliness.

“What we’re going to do is that it’s a big word of microbial wiping and that they have our cleaning methods certified. If we had a COVID outbreak after disinfecting – deep disinfecting the classroom – they could come in and this certify classrooms as COVID-free, ”Stokes said.

Ouachita Christian School has their first day of school this Friday in the outdoor pavilion grounds to allow for social distancing and allow parents to see their children with the teachers on the first day.
