Otty Aura Hybrid vs Eve Lighter Hybrid: Background and Range

Otty is one of the lesser known mattress manufacturers in the UK, but also one of the most interesting. The company attaches great importance to equality and diversity in the workplace. The Leeds-based warehouse is operated by its own disabled employees. They also donate large numbers of returned mattresses to local charities. Note, however, that while Otty is a UK company, its mattresses are all made in China.

CEO Michal Szlas said he founded Otty in 2016 because personally he couldn’t find a mattress that he liked and that was affordable. The cheapest hybrid mattress to date, the Otty Aura Hybrid mattress starts at £ 349 – a full £ 50 cheaper than their standard Otty Hybrid mattress.

Eve was founded in 2014 and is best known for their Eve Original foam mattress. Eve currently has six mattresses in its range, priced between £ 299 (for the Eve Lighter mattress) and £ 948 (for the Eve Premium mattress). The Lighter Hybrid mattress is priced right in the middle of this range, starting at £ 429. All mattresses are made in the UK with the exception of the Premium which is designed in the UK and made in Belgium.

Otty Aura Hybrid

The Aura hybrid mattress is 230 mm deep and contains 70% feathers to 30% foam. It is surrounded by a thick knitted cover that is removable and machine washable.

The top layer of the mattress consists of 30 mm temperature-regulating memory foam with Cool Blue Gel added to prevent the build-up of heat. Underneath there is another 30 mm high-density foam, which is supposed to relieve pressure points.

These lie on the main core of 140 mm, which has 1,000 pocket springs. This is surrounded by a foam-side pad that is perforated to further improve cooling. All of this sits on top of a supportive layer of HD base foam.

The Eve Lighter Hybrid is 200 mm deep and consists of a combination of pocket springs and Eve’s proprietary comfort foam. The moisture-wicking cover made of 98% polyester and 2% elastane is removable and machine washable.

Underneath is a 30 mm thick top layer of open-cell comfort foam. The core consists of a 90mm section with 650 pocket springs surrounded by a 25mm foam case. All of this rests on a supportive layer of base foam.

Verdict: Otty wins

Both mattresses are well constructed, with quality materials and built-in cooling elements. However, the Otty’s greater depth makes it a superior model and remains rather solid and supportive over time.

Otty Aura Hybrid versus Eve Lighter Hybrid: comfort

Otty Aura Hybrid

With excellent airflow, a generous amount of pocket springs, and a pleasant combination of foam layers, the Otty Aura Hybrid offers an impressive level of comfort and support for its low price. You will neither feel “stuck” in the mattress as with a conventional memory foam model, nor “lie on top” as with pure spring mattresses. Instead, this mattress hits a nice sweet spot between the two extremes. We’d give it 6 out of 10 for strength.

Eve lighter hybrid

The Eve Lighter Hybrid perfectly combines the pressure-relieving properties of memory foam with the support of pocket springs. This helps maintain good spine alignment and a good balance between “bounce” and “cradle”, which is a cut above all foam mattresses. It limits the transmission of motion and also regulates the temperature well. We’d call it a 7 out of 10 for strength reasons.

Verdict: a tie

Although both mattresses are constructed differently, they offer a similar level of comfort, support and temperature regulation. However, if you prefer a firmer mattress, you’re better off with the Eve, while the Otty gets closer to a real midsize company.

Should I buy the Otty Aura Hybrid or the Eve Lighter Hybrid?

In truth, it’s a close affair as these two hybrid mattresses are well made, offer a good level of comfort, support, and cooling, and are great value for money overall. If we had to choose between them, we’d probably go for the Otty Aura Hybrid as it’s both considerably deeper (230mm to 200mm of the Eve) and cheaper to boot. That said, if you sleep in the front or back, or someone with a heavier build, you will be better off with the Eve Lighter Hybrid as it is the firmer of the two mattresses.
