Electric truck developer Nikola Corp. and the refuse transport specialist Republic Services have ended their collaboration on the development of garbage trucks.

The couple worked on a garbage truck based on an emission-free battery-electric propulsion platform and body. A statement said that after “considerable collaboration and review” they agreed that the combination of technology and design concepts “would result in longer than expected development time and unexpected costs”.

In August, Republic Services agreed to purchase 2,500 Nikola electric garbage trucks, with the potential for up to 5,000 orders. Initial testing should have started in Arizona and California, with broader testing in 2022 and full deployment by 2023.
