Mother arrested after newborn found dead in Coney Island dumpster: police

CONEY ISLAND, Brooklyn – Police arrested a woman after her newborn baby was found dead in a dumpster in Coney Island earlier this week.

Jahmika Small, 27, was taken into custody and charged with reckless endangerment and behavior for a child under the age of 17.

The officers received the call on Wednesday at around 4:50 p.m. The police initially reported that the woman said she had given birth but could not explain the child’s whereabouts.

According to police sources, the mother told authorities on Thursday that the baby was in the dumpster.

Officers alerted EMS, and shortly afterwards the child was found unconscious and unresponsive in a garbage in a dumpster on West 27th Street near Mermaid Avenue, police said. The child was pronounced dead.

According to police sources, the child had been in the dumpster since February 12. It was not made clear whether the baby had died or not when it was left in the dumpster.
