Mattress Mack opens Houston Gallery Furniture store as shelter to people iced out in winter storm

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) – He got on the clutch during Hurricane Harvey, and now Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale is doing it again. This time he’s opening the doors of Gallery Furniture to get people out of their cold homes.

Power outages that have lasted longer than 24 hours have forced people to urgently seek warmth as the region grapples with this historic winter storm.

Many have nowhere to go. As a result, Mattress Mack opened two gallery furniture locations as heat centers with food, coffee, hot chocolate, blankets and sweatshirts.

The shelters are located in his stores at 6006 North Freeway in Houston and 7227 West Grand Parkway South in Richmond.

“The cold is bitter so we’re opening the doors to the Houstonians,” Mattress Mack said, adding that there is 24/7 security.

He asked people to let those near these places try to use the shelters first instead of letting people drive around town to visit them.

Even so, he said the first question he asked during that winter storm was, “What can we do to help?”

“Instead of complaining about what should have been done, let’s just do things that are good for the community. Get people out of here. Whether they want to stay two hours with power restored, or two.” Want to stay days We are there for the community, “he said.

At 11:20 a.m. on Tuesday, Mattress Mack told there were about 15 to 20 people in the store on North Freeway, but he expected more to arrive.

Houstonians will recall that Mattress Mack did the same without hesitation in 2017 when Harvey crippled the area. According to this weather report, many areas received more than 40 inches of rain in four days.

Harvey had peak accumulations of over 60 inches of rain.

At that time Mattress Mack ordered employees to pick up people stranded in their homes and cars. They were then moved to the Gallery Furniture showroom and warehouse on North Freeway and a second showroom in Richmond on Grand Parkway.

If you can’t make it to Gallery Furniture’s shelter, there are a number of emergency shelters and warming stations to help those in need. Check this list.
