Letter: It’s time for a fresh take on trash hauling in Monroe County – Opinion – poconorecord.com

With the roads I drive in Monroe County becoming more and more littered, I wonder what our county commissioners are going to do. Are you interested? Do you have a plan? One thing that strikes me in my neighborhood is that some people have their trash picked up weekly by either DM Palmisano, County Waste, or Waste Management. Some neighbors never took away rubbish. What do you do with your trash? Are you the reason we see big garbage bags in the forest?

When I lived in New Jersey, garbage collection was included in our taxes. Everyone took their rubbish away on the specified day and off we went. Here in Monroe County everyone is expected to choose a garbage truck and pay for it themselves. Obviously, some people choose not to conform.

Then there are the weekenders, the AirBNB rentals. These people never handed out rubbish for collection. Do you take your rubbish home with you? I doubt it.

Isn’t it time our county commissioners change the way we handle garbage collection? Can’t they get a contract with a garbage truck and just let us pay for garbage collection in our taxes? Wouldn’t that be more efficient? Then nobody can unsubscribe and everyone gets rid of their garbage properly.

Carol O’Neill, Henryville
