How to practice feng shui without rearranging your furniture

Feng Shui is an ancient philosophy from China that comes from Taoism. Taoism is a philosophy that encompasses all the ways of the natural world and is a model for living in complete harmony with the universe around you.

With that in mind, you may have heard of Feng Shui when it comes to arranging rooms in a certain way. The goal of Feng Shui is to use energy forces and create harmony between you and your surroundings.

In The Know’s, Phoebe Zaslav decided to feng shui her apartment to optimize her good mood.

“As a super basic definition, Feng Shui stems from the Taoist belief that the way you choose to arrange pieces in your living space can help create a balance with the natural world,” Phoebe explained.

“It’s definitely more of a holistic practice, but the idea is to use energy and create harmony between an individual and their environment,” she added.

Feng Shui offers an excellent model for the relaxing, calm and productive organization of your space. But like most young professionals in New York City, Phoebe didn’t have much flexibility when it came to rearranging her furniture due to the small space available. So she decided to focus her Feng Shui on decorating.

These are the four feng shui decorating tips that worked for you.

1. Add mirror

“Mirrors can make any room appear larger. Instead of looking at just one wall, look at the space reflected on the other side. It’s an illusion, but it’s an effective one, ”Phoebe said.

That said, the more mirrors you put up, the more spacious the room will feel.

“It is also an important factor in Feng Shui to ensure that your space reflects what you want to wear in your life,” she added.

2. Eliminate the clutter

When you remove clutter from your room, an open space is created that clears the way for you to take advantage of the opportunities you want.

“When Feng Shui experts talk about disorder, they talk about how it blocks and removes your ‘positive energy’. A clear, confusing space will also open the way for positive energy and a good mood, ”she said.

3rd Integrate the elements

Earth, wood, fire, earth, metal and water are the five elements of Feng Shui. If you stop and look around your room, you will likely find that you already have many of these items.

“Wood elements can be anything from flowers, plants and trees to wooden furniture and even cotton and other natural fabrics,” Phoebe explained.

Fire can look like candles, sunlight, animal prints, and even electronics, Phoebe said, “or any shade of red, pink, or purple.”

“Earth is everything in earth tones like brown, green or sand, landscapes or pieces that come from the earth like crystals or Himalayan salt rocks,” she said.

Water elements include aquariums, fountains, mirrors, dark-tinted objects, and art with asymmetrical shapes.

“And finally, the metal element can be any type of metal, including gold or silver, rocks and stones, any round shape, and any white, gray, silver, or light pastel color,” Phoebe said.

4th Try to incorporate crystals

If a room doesn’t have a lot of natural light, hanging a crystal in the window can help.

“The sunlight reflected by the crystal creates patterns of light on the walls, ceiling or floor and supplies your room with energy,” said Phoebe. “A hanging crystal is also said to slow down and dissipate the positive chi energy entering through your window.”

The crystal can use the power of chi, the force that animates the universe and reflects it throughout the room, as opposed to rushing through the window and out the door.

“Be sure to try these decoration tips!” Phoebe said. “Your room should be your ultimate zen space.”
