DTE Energy’s Appliance Recycling Program puts money back in customers’ pockets

“Since the program started in 2009, over 181,000 fridges and freezers have been recycled, which has more than saved customers $ 28 million on energy costs, “said Knox Cameron, manager of DTE’s Appliance Recycling Program.” Removing these old, inefficient devices is an easy way to save energy, protect the environment and reduce energy costs. ”

To qualify for DTE’s Appliance Recycling Program, refrigerators and freezers must:

  • Range from 10 to 32 cubic feet in capacity
  • Be at least 10 years old
  • Be ready and empty at the time of pickup

DTE Energy pays additionally $ 20 each for old room air conditioners or dehumidifiers, if these are added at the same time as the refrigerators and freezers.

To manage the program, DTE has partnered with SEEL, Solutions for Energy Efficient Logistics, to handle program pickup. and Goodwill Green Works (GGW) will recycle the inefficient equipment. Located in Detroit, GGW will support the recycling of collected devices, disassemble the devices safely and recycle them in an environmentally conscious manner and keep them away from landfills.

GGW fulfills Goodwill’s mission to support people with employment problems through key vocational training, education and placement programs. DTE and Goodwill have long worked together on a shared mission of sustainability Michigan Resources and jobs.
