Practitioners of the Placemaking Green Furniture Concept enrich hectic public spaces with harmony and well-being. The latest modular, sustainable seating system, Ascent, combines nature and geometry – resulting in truly improved sitting.

Placemaking is the art of bringing identity and wellbeing into public space. International transport hubs such as airports and train stations, for example, are responsible for hundreds of thousands of visitor experiences each day, all of which are moving in different directions at the same time. Without a good placemaking design to control and manage the flow of traffic, passengers will only disturb each other and the space will become an echoing cacophony of deterioration.

A busy public space is one of the opposing forces. It has to be large and open to meet all of its visitors’ needs, but also to convey a peaceful sense of belonging and trust. Every seat must feel like an individual private room and at the same time remain securely visible. and it must often contain specific directional information, but still be easy and quick to navigate in any language. The combination of all of these factors is the role of placemaking design.

With the freedom to create seating in any shape, direction, or pattern, Ascent unconsciously guides and guides passing travelers through a calming environment. Perfect for busy transportation hubs like airports. “Furniture is an essential aspect of table making and can help turn a“ room ”into a“ place ”. It can have architectural effects while being tailored to the individual history of the place in which it is located. ‘says Adele Kamel, Head of Global Marketing at the furniture manufacturer Green Furniture Concept.

The straightforward Swedish brand creates spaces with a cultural and community focus and inspires connections through seating, gathering and meeting places. “The public space has changed drastically in terms of design and technology, but somehow the furniture still looks the same as it did in the 50s – straight rows of seats with no added value other than one seat. We wanted to challenge that and create something playful and functional that invites the user to interact, ”says Jonas Ekholst, Head of Design at Green Furniture Concept, about Ascent, the brand’s latest modular seating range.

Public space seating can be defined by a handful of functions: double back, single back, or bench with the occasional curved option that are sometimes thrown in. Ascent manages to provide all of these functions at the same time. It mixes straight and curved sections without a break, flowing from bench to back and back to bench again, with separate modules seamlessly connected to each other. Everything about Ascent seems to flow, and its curved contours and waves are reminiscent of a kind of Möbius bench.

In the Ascent series: “We’ve created a toolbox that architects and designers can play with, and we’re so excited to see what they can create.” says Jonathan Nilsson, CEO of Green Furniture Concept

One might at first think that Ascent was born from a world of geometry and mathematics, but its similarities with nature and wildlife don’t come far behind. For example, a single curved crescent ascent resembles a coastal bay that envelops the body and mind in a warm Nordic embrace. while a longer, sinuous and curved, plunging and rising shape from one angle appears to be a miniature mountain range or a stealthy alligator from another.

Ascent was developed for use in environments with constant 24-hour use and consists of individually placed slats that have been treated with hard wax oil. Regardless of the length or shape of the custom design, it looks like a made-to-order statement. Rather than commissioning a piece of art, creating a site-specific collection of climbs is more like selecting from a selection box. Architects and designers can combine straights, curves, backs and benches with armrests, tables and charging stations, all of which are integrated into the seating furniture. With the associated products from Green Furniture Concept such as leaf lighting and Radius planters or waste disposal, you can create an original plan with character and function, communicate with the surrounding space and gently encourage people to flow with it.

With a real tree trunk and wool felt leaves, the Leaf Tree itself is a perfect complement to the naturally meandering Ascent seats. The ability to color individual leaves in slightly different shades gives Leaf a certain simplified and stylized character. Both the light and seating bring a calm calm to busy public environments, a perfect homage to the beauty and role of nature in a human world.
