Brandon police: Inmate beaten with furniture in custody
WINNIPEG – A group of inmates allegedly attacked another inmate at the Brandon Correctional Center on Saturday, beat him with furniture and took him to the hospital.
“The victim remains in the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries at this point,” said Brandon police in a statement.
The attack occurred around 3:40 pm in the adult male section of the prison.
“Several other inmates physically assaulted the victim by beating him with their fists and feet and with other available objects, including prison furniture,” the release said.
The Serious Crime and Forensic Identification departments were called in to investigate.
The Brandon Correctional Center is a medium security prison with a nominal capacity of 244 men.
It is also a short-term holding center for young offenders and around eight women.
