Body Parts Found in Dumpster After Police Discover Man’s Body in U-Haul Truck in Northeast Philadelphia – NBC10 Philadelphia
Philadelphia police officers found a dismembered body in a trash bag in the back of a U-Haul truck in northeast Philadelphia Thursday morning.
The discovery was made when the rental vehicle stopped along Sanibel Street in the Somerton section after officers reacted around 9 a.m., police said.
Sources told NBC10 that someone called the police for the first time on Wednesday and reported that they were concerned about a man who lived in a nearby house on Sanibel. The police asked for a social check-up, but was informed by a neighbor that the man traveled frequently.
The same neighbor called the police Thursday and said they discovered a suspicious U-Haul truck near the house. Incoming police stopped the truck and found a driver and a passenger inside. When they checked the back of the truck, they found, according to the investigators, the dismembered body of a man in the garbage bag and a weapon.
Later that night, police found other body parts in a dumpster near a wawa a few blocks away, according to a source.
Police have not disclosed the victim’s identity but believe he lived in the Sanibel Street house, sources told NBC10. Neighbors described him as a gentle and kind man who sold honey and gave young men odd jobs to help them.
“He raises bees,” a neighbor Threse Pelbano told NBC10. “He has animals in the house. He’s never bothered anyone.”
Police found several animals in the house, including dogs, lizards and parrots. They are waiting for Animal Control to get the animals out of the house.
The driver and passenger of the U-Haul were taken into police custody. No charges were brought.
