Babysitter accused of leaving 8-month-old girl in Conn. dumpster after stabbing mother

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WFSB) – An 8-month-old Connecticut girl is recovering from a dumpster supposedly by her babysitter, who is also accused of stabbing the child’s mother.

Andiana Velez, 24, is being held on $ 500,000 bail for child injury, second degree assault and reckless first degree harm.

Police say they were supposed to babysit an 8-month-old girl but instead dumped the baby in a dumpster outside an apartment complex in New Haven, Connecticut. Velez is also accused of stabbing the girl’s 21-year-old mother.

Perry Dennis, a maintenance worker, found the little girl in the dumpster on Monday afternoon, took her out, and wrapped the trembling child in a blanket from his apartment.

“I was shocked. I just threw the blanket away because every time I look at the blanket I think of the baby,” said Dennis.

Police say the 8-month-old had burns on her hands. Together with the Department for Children and Families, they continue to investigate how she got the injuries.

Court documentation paints two different stories of the incident.

The baby’s mother says when she picked up her daughter from Velez, whom she had been watching for several days, the woman pulled out a knife and the two quarreled. Meanwhile, Velez claims the mother pulled the knife on her after questioning her about her daughter’s burns.

Velez reportedly told police that she drove to the apartment complex to buy marijuana because she was stressed and that she left the little girl in the dumpster because she knew someone would find her.

“It’s scary to think what kind of person would do that. It’s hard to believe anyone would, ”Dennis said.

Velez will appear in court on October 30th. She reportedly has a long criminal record, including a number of pending cases.
