Abilene man killed in fatal crash after running over a mattress on the road

ABILENE, Texas (KTAB / KRBC) – A 40-year-old Abilene man was killed in a fatal accident that was reported Tuesday morning.

Dustin Garcia, 40, from Abilene, was pronounced dead by the justice of the peace at the scene.

The incident occurred on Highway 277 north of the clear fork of the Brazos Bridge around 6:30 a.m.

According to the Hawley Police Department, the victim was traveling south towards Abilene.

Officials say the victim, who was driving a Toyota Scion in 2005, apparently walked over a mattress that was in the outer lane when he lost control of the vehicle, crossed the inner lane, hit a guardrail, and spun and stayed several times Stand in the middle of the highway to the east.

A Volvo combi tractor driving south in 2012 could not see the vehicle on the road as the dust was raised by the spin-out. The trailer hit the vehicle, killing the only occupant.

The driver of the 18-wheeler suffered minor injuries.

Police say the mattress owner could be accused of not securing the load, which resulted in death.

“One witness reported seeing the mattress fly off the back of a possibly brown pickup in the crew cabin that also had a white device (washer, dryer, etc.) but thought the pickup was slowing to go back and pick him up. If anyone has information on this brown pickup truck please call the Hawley Police Department at 325-537-9311. “Said the Hawley Police Department.
